1.Certifications First
A legitimate manufacturer must hold:
GMP/GMPC — manufacturing quality standard, non-negotiable
ISO 9001 — systematic quality management
FDA registration — required for US market
CPNP — required for EU/UK market
SMETA audit — required by major Western retailers
SGS/Intertek test reports — independent safety testing per batch
No documentation, no deal.
2.Category-Specific Experience
A factory that makes body lotion is not the same as one experienced in lace glue or beard oil. Ask directly: how many SKUs do you currently produce in this category? How many years of experience? Can you provide references?
3.Always Test Physical Samples
Never commit without testing samples first. Check texture, scent, absorption, packaging quality, and stability. Reputable factories provide samples at low or no cost.
4.Realistic MOQ
Standard MOQ for private label:
Existing formulas: 500–1,000 units
Custom formulas: 2,000–5,000 units
Factories demanding 10,000+ units
upfront on a first order are a red flag.
5.Communication Quality
Slow responses during sales mean worse responses after you pay. Look for factories that reply within 24 hours and assign a dedicated account manager.
6.Start Small, Validate, Scale
Launch one or two SKUs first. Get real market feedback before scaling inventory. A good manufacturing partner supports this approach.
